Excel Into Independence, NFP was founded in December 2010. Our vision is to assist homeless youth with locating transitional housing to youth (ages 18-24) who are in college, seeking to enroll in college, or seeking job training for employment opportunities.
Founder and Executive Director, Myrtle Jackson, would encounter several homeless college students and young people in need of guidance in her daily community and professional life activities.
As a result of talking with these young people, she learned that many of them wanted to continue their education by attending and graduating from college. Others were interested in becoming gainfully employed by learning skills that would help them in the workplace. Still others were also interesting in completing their high school education by obtaining a diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
She realized that this population of youth were large in number and wanted to do something to help this group. She wanted to help them with simple things like clothing items, toiletries, and various items the young people need to simply survive.
Thus, Excel Into Independence was born. Ms. Jackson began recruiting volunteers from her family, friends, co-works and community to lend a hand to help these young people.
Since the birth of Excel, the organization has assisted numerous homeless youth with locating housing, enrolling in college and receiving funding for college attendance, enrolling in job training programs, education and training youth with life skills to help them navigate the world.
We allow persons to choose their own path, whether college, job training or life skills. We just help them to Excel!
